WHAT IS LEGALISATION?

Legalization, in essence, is the procedure to verify the authenticity of a signature, seal, or stamp on a document. When it comes to foreign documents, especially legal ones intended for use in another country, they often need to go through the process of legalization. This can be confusing for many people who may mistakenly associate it with Apostille and notarization. In simple terms, legalization is the way to confirm the legitimacy of a legal document.

LEGALISATION

When the country of origin of the document isn’t part of the Hague Convention on Legalization, a more formal legalization process typically becomes necessary. In such instances, the document usually goes through a two-step process. Initially, it’s notarized by a public notary and the relevant authorities in the issuing country to verify its authenticity. Following that, the document is presented to the embassy or consulate of the destination country, which is located in the country of origin. The embassy or consulate then carries out the internal legalization of the document, typically by affixing a special stamp or seal.

It is therefore important to find out at an early stage which process of legalisation is appropriate.
